Why Are Horses Healing? The Quiet Power of Being With a Horse
For as long as I can remember, being around horses has made something inside me become quiet.
I don't have to be riding. I don't even have to be touching them. Simply standing near a horse, hearing them breathe, watching the small movements of their ears or looking into their eyes can bring me a sense of calm and peacefulness that I find difficult to describe.
When I look into a horse's eyes, I often feel an immediate connection. It can feel as though we already understand something about one another without either of us needing to communicate it in words.
I have wondered many times why horses have this effect on us.
Why Do Horses Make Us Feel Calm?
There is something incredibly steady about a horse.
They are powerful animals, yet they are also amazingly sensitive to what is happening around them. When you spend time with a horse, you quickly learn that your own behaviour matters.
You cannot bring chaotic energy into their space and expect them not to notice.
You have to become aware of your movements, your breathing, your attention and the energy you are bringing with you.
To keep a horse calm, you become calmer.
To ask a horse to trust you, you have to become trustworthy.
You become quieter, steadier and more present.
And somewhere in that process, without necessarily intending to, you begin regulating yourself.
Perhaps part of the healing power of horses is as simple as that.
They bring us back into the present moment.
A Horse Requires Your Full Attention
When you are working with a horse, you have to pay attention.
A small sound, movement or unexpected object can suddenly catch their attention. You learn to notice the position of their ears, the tension in their body, the direction of their gaze and tiny changes in their behaviour.
That attention pulls you away from the noise inside your own head.
For a while, you aren't thinking about yesterday or worrying about tomorrow.
You are here.
With this animal.
Now.
I think there is powerful healing in that.
The Horse as a Mirror
I have always thought of animals as mirrors, maps and messengers, and nowhere do I experience this more strongly than with horses.
A horse can be an incredible mirror.
They respond to things we believe we are hiding.
We can tell ourselves that we are calm while our body is tense. We can pretend to be confident while approaching with hesitation. We can try to force an outcome while internally becoming frustrated.
The horse doesn't care about the story we are telling ourselves.
It responds to what is actually there.
That can be confronting, but it can also be incredibly valuable.
The horse reflects something back to us.
Not judgement. Information.
And if we are willing to pay attention, we can learn from it.
The Horse as a Map
Horses can also become maps.
The relationship takes us somewhere.
Learning to work with a horse can reveal our impatience, fear, confidence, gentleness, boundaries and ability to trust. Sometimes the journey taking place internally is every bit as significant as the physical journey we might take together.
You begin by learning about the horse.
Somewhere along the way, you discover that you are also learning about yourself.
That is why I think horses can take us into parts of our subconscious and emotional lives that are sometimes difficult to reach through words alone.
They show us a different route.
The Horse as a Messenger
And then there is the horse as messenger.
For me, their message is about respect.
A relationship with a horse cannot be built through control.
A horse is enormously powerful. Trust has to be earned, and there are consequences when we ignore what the animal is communicating.
But treat a horse with patience, consistency, kindness and respect and something extraordinary can develop between you.
Trust.
Not the shallow kind of trust that comes from familiarity, but the deep trust of two very different beings learning how to understand one another.
Eventually, communication can become almost invisible.
A tiny shift in weight.
A movement of the hand.
A change in posture.
A look.
The horse responds.
You respond to the horse.
There are moments when it can feel as though the boundary between you has temporarily softened.
You move together.
Why Horses Are Healing to Me
I don't think horses heal us because they somehow take our pain away.
I think they do something more spectacular.
They change the conditions inside us.
To really connect with a horse, we have to become present. We have to listen. We have to notice. We have to regulate our emotions rather than simply acting from them.
We have to respect another living being whose language is different from our own.
And when trust finally exists between horse and human, the relationship needs hardly any words.
Perhaps that is why I have felt peaceful around horses for as long as I can remember.
Long before I understood any of this in words, I understood the feeling.
Standing beside a horse made the world quieter.
Looking into their eyes made me feel understood.
And learning to earn their trust taught me that some of the deepest connections we experience in life are not spoken at all.
The horse is the mirror.
The horse is the map.
The horse is the messenger.
And perhaps the healing begins when we become quiet enough to listen.
