Horse Symbolism

Strength, guidance, and the quiet intelligence that recognises what we cannot see

Horses have long been associated with strength, movement, and freedom.
Across cultures, they appear as companions, guides, and messengers between worlds.

But beyond mythology, there is something else.

A sensitivity.
An awareness.
A way of responding to what is felt, rather than what is spoken.

This page explores the symbolic meaning of horses, their role in spiritual connection, and how they appear within my work as part of the God’s Rope series.

TRADITIONAL HORSE SYMBOLISM

Throughout history, horses have carried layered meaning.

They have represented:

  • Strength and endurance

  • Freedom and movement

  • Power guided by trust

  • The journey between physical and spiritual worlds

In many traditions, the horse is not simply transport.
It is a bridge.
A being that carries something from one place to another, often between realms.

THE HORSE AS A SPIRITUAL PRESENCE

Beyond symbolism, horses hold a unique presence.

They respond to energy rather than language.
They recognise stillness.
They mirror what is beneath the surface.

This is why encounters with horses can feel different.

There is often a moment of recognition.
Not learned.
Not constructed.
But immediate.

In this sense, the horse is not just symbolic.

It is a witness.

THE HORSE IN MY WORK

In my paintings, horses are not used as decorative or narrative elements.

They appear at moments of connection.

They meet the human figure in a space where:

  • words are no longer needed

  • explanation is unnecessary

  • presence is enough

They are drawn to something that is not visible, but felt.

This forms part of my ongoing series, God’s Rope, where each encounter creates a thread, building a connection over time.

HELD IN HEAVEN

This connection becomes most visible in my painting Held in Heaven.

In this work, a woman stands beside a white horse, her eyes closed, not in withdrawal, but in trust.

The horse does not lead or follow.
It meets her.

Above them, light descends, and within it, golden threads begin to form, revealing a connection that is no longer hidden.

WHAT THE HORSE REPRESENTS IN THIS WORK

Within this series, the horse represents:

  • Recognition beyond the visible

  • Guidance without force

  • Presence without condition

  • A meeting point between worlds

It is not symbolic in a distant sense.

It is immediate.
