The Golden Threads

An evolving body of work by Debbie Moylan

Symbolic oil paintings exploring the unseen connections between humans, animals, ancestry and the stories carried across cultures and generations.

What Binds Us?

What binds us to the animals who enter our lives?

What binds us to our ancestors, to the natural world and to those we continue to love after they are gone?

Across history and geography, people have repeatedly imagined their deepest connections as threads, cords, knots and interlaced forms. These images appear in personal beliefs, ancient myths, spiritual traditions and stories passed from one generation to the next.

The Golden Threads brings these ideas into a continuing body of paintings about connection, protection, destiny, belonging and remembrance.

A Private Belief

The Golden Threads began with a private belief I called God’s Rope.

Since childhood, animals have been my refuge, my family and some of my greatest teachers. Through a lifetime of encounters, sanctuary and rescue, I came to imagine that every animal we truly recognise creates an invisible golden thread between us.

Each thread carries something different: love, trust, protection, grief, courage or memory. Over a lifetime, I believe these individual threads become woven together into something stronger, forming a rope that accompanies and ultimately guides us home.

God’s Rope remains the autobiographical origin of the project. It is my lived experience and my personal answer to the question of what binds us.

An Expanding Enquiry

As the paintings developed, I began to recognise that the image of an invisible thread reaches far beyond my own story.

Threads have been used across cultures to express fate, ancestry, protection, relationship and the passage between visible and unseen worlds. They appear in weaving, mythology, ritual, storytelling and the forms through which communities preserve memory.

The Golden Threads expands outward from my personal mythology to explore these wider traditions. It does not seek to combine them into one universal belief. Each chapter will remain rooted in its own history, place and cultural meaning.

Through painting and research, I am interested in where these traditions meet, where they differ and why the language of threads has endured.

The Volumes

The Golden Threads is structured as a series of volumes and chapters. Some arise from lived experience and ancestry; others will develop gradually through historical research and respectful engagement with the cultures from which their stories emerge.

VOLUME I: FOUNDATIONS

Lived experience and ancestral memory

Chapter One

GOD’S ROPE

Childhood, sanctuary and rescue

The autobiographical origin of The Golden Threads, formed through my lifelong relationships with animals and my belief that love creates connections that neither distance nor death can entirely sever.

Chapter Two

THE CELTIC INTERLACE

Irish ancestry and the Otherworld

An emerging chapter exploring animal symbolism, ancestral memory and the Celtic understanding of visible and unseen worlds existing alongside one another. Its interlaced forms suggest connections without a clear beginning or end.

Currently developing through research and painting.

Future Volumes

Future volumes will move beyond my personal and ancestral foundations to consider ancient Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, Eastern and Indigenous traditions of thread, weaving, destiny and connection.

Possible chapters include Greek stories of the labyrinth and the threads of fate, protective cords and animal encounters shaped by the desert, the Vedic meaning of sutra, East Asian traditions of the thread of destiny and culturally specific understandings of the interconnected web of life.

These are developing research territories rather than completed conclusions. Their final forms will be determined by the histories, voices and paintings that emerge from the enquiry.

Animals as Participants

Throughout The Golden Threads, animals are not used as decorative symbols or passive companions.

They appear as protectors, witnesses, healers, messengers and guides. Some are drawn from animals I have known and rescued. Others emerge through ancestral stories, mythology and cultural traditions.

Each painting begins with the possibility that an encounter between a human and an animal can contain a form of recognition: quiet, instinctive and beyond words.

The Golden Thread

Gold recurs throughout the paintings as light, line, atmosphere and thread.

Within God’s Rope, it represents the bonds formed through my own encounters with animals. Across the wider project, the thread becomes both a visual language and a question: how do we give form to connections that can be felt but not seen?

Its meaning may change from one chapter to another, but it always signals that something is passing between lives.

Follow the Journey

The Golden Threads will unfold over many years through paintings, writing, research and exhibition.
