Before Words: When Trust Exists Without Language
There are moments that do not need to be explained
Some connections happen without asking.
There is no movement that begins them, no words that define them. They arrive quietly, in stillness, and are understood without needing to be spoken.
Before Words was painted from that kind of moment.
A dog resting its head into a hand.
A hand that does not reach or hold, but receives.
Nothing is being asked for, and nothing is being given.
Yet something is there.
The moment that shaped the painting
This work did not begin with an action or a story.
It began with a feeling of stillness.
I wanted to paint a moment where trust was already present, not something that needed to be built or proven. The kind of trust that exists before thought, before explanation.
The focus became the point of contact.
Where the dog’s nose meets the hand.
That place had to feel real. Not just in form, but in weight. The hand needed to respond, not pose. The dog needed to rest, not reach.
Everything else in the painting followed that decision.
What the dog represents in this work
In my paintings, animals are not just subjects.
They are participants in a shared recognition.
Here, the dog represents a form of trust that does not hesitate. A presence that settles fully, without needing reassurance.
It is not alert. It is not asking.
It is simply there.
This kind of connection is often recognised rather than understood. Many people who are drawn to this work have experienced it in their own lives, even if they have never put it into words.
The role of the golden thread
The golden thread appears throughout my work as part of the God’s Rope series.
It represents the unseen connections that form between humans and animals over time.
In Before Words, the thread is quieter than in other paintings.
It does not lead the moment.
It follows it.
This was important.
Because the connection exists first. The meaning comes after.
Each of these moments becomes part of a larger structure, a rope formed gradually across a lifetime, built through trust, recognition, and shared presence.
Why stillness matters
There is no movement in this painting.
No action, no interruption.
That was intentional.
Stillness allows something else to surface. Something that is often missed when everything is explained or made visible.
This painting sits in that space before language.
Before meaning is shaped into something that can be spoken.
It is a moment that can only be felt.
Before Words within the God’s Rope series
This painting forms part of an ongoing body of work exploring the connection between humans and animals as something instinctive and mutual.
Each painting represents a moment of recognition.
Together, they form a path.
A rope that extends beyond what can be seen, built from encounters that carry meaning without needing to be explained.
