This painting was inspired by one of my own dogs. It is not an exact portrait of likeness, but a distillation of expression. I wanted to capture the feeling of his presence, the way he would rest beside me with quiet watchfulness, aware even in stillness. There is a particular devotion in animals that does not ask to be seen. It does not perform. It simply remains.
The composition is intentionally restrained. The background recedes into shadow to allow the gaze to anchor the viewer. Subtle glazes deepen the form, enriching the golden warmth of the fur while preserving softness. The eyes are the centre of the work, carrying both rest and vigilance. This balance was essential. True loyalty is gentle, yet protective.
