Early Works Collection, 2018–2024
The Unconquered was inspired by Picasso, a wild mustang stallion who became famous for his remarkable longevity and survival in the American West.
Picasso lived for approximately thirty years, enduring the challenges of life in the wild, including battles with rival stallions. His story fascinated me, particularly his independence, resilience and determination to survive.
I have always admired the spirit of wild horses, their strength, freedom and ability to endure in an environment where survival is never guaranteed.
In this painting, I wanted to capture something of Picasso's character rather than create a traditional horse portrait.
The composition combines expressive brushwork, rich earthy colours, vivid blues and geometric passages of gold leaf. The close-up perspective gives the horse a powerful presence, while the contrasting textures and colours reflect my experimentation with different materials and approaches to painting.
Created in 2023, The Unconquered belongs to a period when I was exploring the lives and stories of individual animals, searching for ways to communicate what made them so extraordinary to me.
