2023 | Original Oil and Mixed Media Painting
24 × 18 inches | Oil and mixed media on canvas
Early Works Collection, 2018–2024
Inspired by the film Hidalgo, which tells the story of a mustang and his rider undertaking an extraordinary endurance race across the Arabian desert.
I have always loved stories about horses, particularly those that explore their courage, independence and extraordinary spirit. The story of Hidalgo appealed to my fascination with the relationship between humans and horses, and the determination of an animal whose strength and character cannot easily be measured.
In this painting, I wanted to capture something of that spirit rather than recreate a particular scene from the film.
The larger horse dominates the composition, while a second, almost ethereal horse gallops through the landscape behind him. Warm golden colours contrast with the cooler blues, bringing together a sense of strength, movement and freedom.
Created in 2023, The Spirit of Hidalgo belongs to a period when I was exploring how the animal stories I loved in books and films could inspire my own paintings.
An original painting from my Early Works Collection, offered unframed.
