A lion sits quietly amongst the grasses, his gaze directed towards something beyond the painting. Against a dark, atmospheric background, touches of violet, blue and warm earth colours create a sense of stillness and quiet strength.
I have always been fascinated by big cats, particularly their independence, dignity and natural presence.
When I painted this lion in 2021, I was still exploring how I wanted to portray animals and what I wanted to communicate through my work. I was experimenting with colour, atmosphere and expression, looking for ways to capture something of an animal's character beyond its physical appearance.
This painting belongs to that earlier period of exploration, when my connection with animals was already central to my work, although I had not yet developed the visual language of The Golden Threads.
