2024 | Original Oil Painting
10 × 12 inches | Oil on canvas
Early Works Collection, 2018–2024
The First Bite is a contemporary still life exploring how light and composition can transform an ordinary subject into a moment of storytelling.
Created in 2024 during my coaching with artist Stefan Baumann, this painting was part of my exploration of light, shadow and the narrative possibilities of everyday objects.
As a former chef, food has always been an important part of my life. I find it fascinating how food can communicate so much beyond what we eat, from pleasure and anticipation to memories, emotions and personal experiences.
For this painting, I chose a familiar fast food meal, capturing the moment after the first bite has been taken from the burger.
The illuminated food, discarded packaging and surrounding darkness suggest someone's presence, although the person remains unseen.
I wanted to explore how an apparently simple scene could invite the viewer to imagine a story, using light to draw attention to the details and atmosphere.
The First Bite belongs to my Early Works Collection, representing a period when I was developing my understanding of light, composition and visual storytelling.
An original oil painting from my Early Works Collection, offered unframed.
