Instinct is an expressive portrait of a leopard, captured with bared teeth and an intense, unwavering gaze. Rich earthy colours and energetic strokes of liquid gold bring movement and intensity to the composition.
When I painted this in 2018, I was still searching for my direction as an artist. I knew that I wanted to paint animals and explore the connection between them and us, but I didn't yet understand exactly what I was trying to communicate.
What I did know was how I felt when I looked into an animal's eyes. There was something deeply instinctive about that connection, something I had experienced throughout my life but struggled to put into words.
I was following a feeling rather than a clearly defined artistic vision, experimenting with materials, colour and expression as I searched for a way to communicate it.
Looking back, Instinct represents one of those early steps towards discovering my own artistic language, long before the ideas behind The Golden Threads began to take shape.
