2023 | Original Oil Painting
12 × 16 inches | Oil on paper
Early Works Collection, 2018–2024
When I was ten years old, my mother gave me the nickname Bumble.
I had been sulking about something, and she thought I looked like a little chubby bumblebee. She found it very funny, and from that day onwards, she always called me Bumble.
It became her special name for me, a little piece of our relationship that stayed with us throughout my life.
I painted this bumblebee in 2023, the year my mother died, after I had spent the previous year nursing her.
Looking at this painting now, I see far more than a little creature surrounded by colour. I see a childhood memory, my mother's sense of humour, and the affection contained in a name that only she gave me.
Sometimes the smallest things hold the greatest memories.
Bumble is an original oil painting from my Early Works Collection, offered unframed and unmounted.
