There is always a moment near the end of a painting when the work begins to go quiet.

It is not about detail or technique. It is a feeling more than anything else, a sense that the painting no longer asks to be pushed further. Before the Thread Was Named arrived at that moment slowly, through soft adjustments and small decisions that shaped its atmosphere rather than its structure.

This painting began with a simple feeling of stillness. A white horse and a woman sharing space without urgency, held together by a calm light that feels more like presence than illumination. I was drawn to the idea of connection before understanding, those early moments in life when trust exists without explanation.

As the painting developed, I found myself removing more than adding. Edges softened, forms dissolved into atmosphere, and the space between the figures became more important than detail. The painting seemed to ask for quiet rather than clarity, for gentleness rather than definition.

Before the Thread Was Named now sits within my ongoing God’s Rope series, a body of work exploring my belief that animals are sacred companions who enter our lives with purpose. In this series, light often represents the invisible threads that form between us and the animals we meet. These threads are not always recognised when they begin. Sometimes they are simply felt.

The small bird near the lower edge appeared almost naturally as the painting unfolded, a quiet messenger that grounds the composition without demanding attention. Like many of the symbols in my work, it does not explain itself. It simply exists as part of the atmosphere.

Finishing this painting reminded me that stillness is not emptiness. It is a form of presence. The moments that shape us most often arrive softly, without announcement, and only later do we realise they were the beginning of something larger.

Before the Thread Was Named is now complete and available as part of the God’s Rope series.

Debbie

I am a spiritual painter guided by a golden thread that connects animals, soul, and God. Through my paintings I reveal animals as mirrors, maps, and messengers - each one a sacred whisper from heaven.
