Always There - The Quiet Beginning of Devotion
There are some presences in life that do not announce themselves.
They do not arrive with spectacle. They do not ask to be seen. They simply remain.
“Always There” belongs to the Prelude chapter of my God’s Rope series. Prelude explores the beginnings of devotion, before the path is understood, before the connection is named. It is where belief is formed through lived experience rather than words.
This painting was inspired by one of my own dogs. It is not an exact portrait of likeness. I did not want to record markings or create a formal study. I wanted to capture the feeling of his expression. The way he would rest his head nearby. The way he remained aware, even in stillness. The quiet watchfulness that felt protective rather than intrusive.
There is a particular expression devoted animals carry. They soften, but they do not withdraw. They rest, but they do not abandon. That balance was essential to this work.
Technically, the painting is restrained. The background recedes into shadow so the gaze becomes the anchor. Subtle darker glazes strengthen the structure of the face without hardening it. Warmer tones enrich the fur without making it shine. The eyes were refined carefully so they feel moist rather than glossy, deepened just enough to hold both rest and vigilance.
Within the larger narrative of God’s Rope, the sacred does not begin in radiance. It begins in constancy.
Before light becomes luminous.
Before threads become visible.
Before the rope is formed.
It begins with devotion learned quietly beside us.
“Always There” represents one of those first unseen strands. The kind that forms long before we understand where it is leading. The steady companionship that shapes our understanding of loyalty, faithfulness, and protection.
This is a painting of steadiness.
A painting of watchful love.
A painting of the kind of presence that never truly leaves.
